Natural Diamond VS Lab-grown Diamond

Natural diamonds

Natural diamonds are the composition of pure carbon. Diamonds are formed beneath the surface of the earth, which is a years-long process. Natural diamonds are found in many countries worldwide. The mining process of diamonds requires time, labour as well as money. Even after extracting the rough diamond from the mine, there is a lengthy process. And that is why natural diamonds are considered rare.

Lab-grown diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are made in laboratories by humans. In recent years they have gained popularity. They have the same chemical structure and physical appearance as natural diamonds. It is not easy to differentiate between natural and lab-grown diamonds with the naked eye. Even experts need special tools to figure out, whether it’s a lab-grown or natural diamond. Every lab-grown diamond is unique. They have inclusions, and they vary in colour, clarity and cut. The hardness of lab-grown diamonds is the same as natural diamonds. GIA also provides the certificate for lab-grown diamonds.

How are the lab-grown diamonds created?

Lab-grown diamond goes through the same process as natural diamond but in laboratories. Natural diamonds take millions of years to process, whereas lab-grown diamonds only take a few months in laboratories. Popular methods, such as Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT), are used to create lab-grown diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds made with these methods are chemically, optically and physically, the same as natural diamonds.

Price factor in natural and lab-grown diamond

There is a vast price gap between natural and lab grown diamonds. Lab grown diamonds are super pocket friendly, as they are way cheaper than natural diamonds. Approximately, lab grown diamonds are available at 40% to 80% lesser prices than natural diamonds. When we consider the resale value, there is also a huge difference. Lab-grown diamonds price is falling on a day-to-day basis for many reasons. Lab grown diamonds are less valuable.

Major differences between natural and lab grown diamonds

The price factor is the biggest difference between natural and lab grown diamonds. The other significant difference is nitrogen. Traces of nitrogen are found in natural diamonds, whereas lab grown diamonds don’t have traces of nitrogen. Natural diamonds are rare because they are limited. However, lab grown diamonds are not rare, as they can be mass-produced.

Which one should you buy?

Well, the answer to this question depends on many factors. If you want a big diamond at a very affordable price, then you should go for a lab grown diamond. Unless you tell no one with naked eyes can tell that it is not a natural diamond. However, while buying a diamond, if you have an investment perspective, then you should opt for a natural diamond. As lab-grown diamonds are not going to retain their value as much as natural diamonds. Whatever type of diamond you choose, the important factors will remain 4cs in both cases.
